Today’s “Hot Trend” is really a health emergency. So here are the facts about the Swine Flu in a nutshell.

Caused by a virus common in pigs, this virus has developed the ability to jump and be spread from human to human. The good news is that it seems to respond to antiviral drugs. Swine flu symptoms similar to those of regular flu - fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing. Some people with swine flu also have reported runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Human infection from pigs are most likely to occur when people come in close proximity to infected animals, such as in pig barns and livestock exhibits housing pigs at fairs. There is no danger of catching Swine Flu from eating pork.

Human-to-human transmission of swine flu is believed to occur the same way as the common seasonal flu, through the sneezing and coughing of people infected with the influenza virus.

Another way people become infected is by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose. So some of the ways to avoid catching the flu are:

1) Cover nose and mouth

2) Wash hands often

3) Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth

4) Avoid close contact with sick people

If you feel you are coming down with flu symptoms see a doctor immediately- and try to avoid social situations. For example, if you feel you are getting sick, don't get on public transportation and go to work. Call in sick and go to a doctor.
